Gemma Maddocks

Gemma Maddocks is the founder of GEM Literacy. She is an experienced primary school teacher and leader who has taught in New Zealand, United Kingdom, Kuwait and China.

Gemma is currently the Literacy Leader and Literacy Intervention Specialist Teacher at Robertson Road School where she leads Structured Literacy from Year 1-8.

Gemma also uses her literacy intervention experience and passion to support schools and educators to create equitable learning pathways in reading, writing and spelling so ALL our ākonga can succeed.

What makes us different?

At GEM Literacy we know that it is teacher knowledge and expertise which has the biggest impact on ākonga achievement. We empower teachers to take ownership of their learning through an explicit, systematic and cumulative approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling.

We support teachers to unpack the Science of Learning and how this is applied to effective teaching and learning in the classroom.

Focus on Equity

We focus on equitable literacy outcomes for all ākonga by improving instruction across all tiers of support (Tiered Support Model).

In-Class Coaching Model

We use an in-class coaching model that empowers teachers to take ownership of their own learning - providing them with the support they need to excel.

Collaborative & Supportive

GEM Literacy believes in a collaborative, practical and engaging approach to PLD facilitation.

Whole School Approach

We support schools to develop a whole school approach to literacy instruction from Year 1-8.

Growing Literacy Links

GEM Literacy believes links to literacy should be embedded across the curriculum to enable ākonga to connect knowledge to themselves and the wider world.
